About the bench

The workshop in Nanjing: shelves of vintage cassette decks above a bench lit by a single lamp

Cassette deck restoration since 1983

Forty-three
years at the bench

I started repairing cassette decks in 1983, in a small workshop in Nanjing. Back then, parts were scarce and service manuals even scarcer. Every working deck was a lesson.

Over four decades, that bench has seen thousands of machines — each one disassembled, understood, and brought back to life. No shortcuts, no mystery fixes: a deck leaves only when it measures right and sounds right.

Today the work is the same. Careful. Thorough. Personal. The bench does not list a deck it would not keep, and every question is answered by the person holding the screwdriver.
